It's certainly a huge eyeopener for all online social media networks and blogs. Social networking can and is a great medium for sharing ideas, keeping in touch and so on. It would be a shame if the future of this is stifled by such precedents being set. The law should really come down on those who uploaded this information in the first place.

I agree - to an extent. Like so many things, it comes down to finding a workable balance. No doubt that is why there are exemptions from liability for internet intermediaries provided that they have good notice and take down policies. We'll just have to wait and see how data protection laws are interpreted in light of this decision - they do not offer such exemptions.

I have been told that the bullies were suitably punished also...

Interesting article on this case in Out-Law (http://www.out-law.com/page-10971) in which an Italian lawyer argues that the Google convictions in Italy are 'based on legal error'. Watch this space for Google's appeal...
